  • Les Baux-de-Provence, France "Carrières des Lumières"
    Carrières des Lumières

Immersive Media Art®, which was first introduced in France in 2012, was used as an efficient tool for urban regeneration projects, contributing to the revitalization of local economies by resurrecting buildings that had lost their purpose, such as abandoned factories and schools, into art spaces within a short period of time and at low costs.
For example, the population of Les Baux-de-Provence plummeted to 15,000 after its quarry was shut down in 1935. Then in 2012, the closed quarry cave was chosen as the site for the Immersive Media Art® project and the launching of Carrières des Lumières. Since then, it has been transformed into a tourist city attracting about 600,000 visitors annually (as of 2016).
